Lizzie Bryan
Candidate for Fowlmere Parish Council elections
5th May 2022
ABOUT ME
My childhood was spent in Fowlmere, running wild in the fields, ditches and streams. Keen to provide my children with a similar childhood, almost eight years ago, my husband and I left Army Quarters to purchase our family home in the centre of the village, on the High Street.

Our three children attend Fowlmere Primary School, having previously been at the village Playgroup. We eat and drink in the fantastic Chequers Pub and Saffron Restaurant, use the village hall, go to Messy Church, make camps in the Moat, roam the fields and explore the bird reserve.
I have the time, energy, skills (having developed and co-ordinated a team of 25 nurses in a busy London Emergency Department), enthusiasm and long-term commitment to be a Parish Councillor. Fowlmere is a fantastic village, and living in the heart of it, both physically and emotionally, I’d love to help guide, enhance and protect its future.

WHY I'M STANDING FOR ELECTION
-
To further support the local community
As a village resident for 25 years (combined) I have extensive knowledge of Fowlmere’s history and its concerns and have regularly attended Parish Council meetings. I have a genuine interest and desire to be more actively involved in providing help and guidance to villagers.
-
To be part of carefully considered changes
I am concerned with the increasing external pressure for large housing developments in our village. We need to evolve and develop to thrive, but not to the detriment of Fowlmere’s character. Development needs to be balanced, prioritising the needs of the village above profit for would-be developers.
-
To bring a fresh (and female) perspective to the Parish Council
As a mother of a young family, I am keen that this currently under-represented group has a platform but will also ensure that the voices of all residents are heard and involved in decision-making. Diversity and greater representation are key to successful village life.

I am standing as an independent candidate, not affiliated with any political party.
A BIT ABOUT WHAT I DO
I currently work part-time as a school nurse in Cambridge and at Addenbrookes Emergency Department (ED), returning to the latter at the height of the pandemic to support the NHS.

Previously I have held senior clinical and managerial nursing roles in the NHS, including 10 years working as an ED Sister and Emergency Nurse Practitioner. I have extensive experience of management and decision-making at pace, in a highly complex and regulated environment, that requires judgement and compassion.
VOLUNTARY WORK

-
Three years as a committee member of The Fowlmere Playgroup Committee, with the Secretarial role for over a year. Continue to assist at the popular Thrift Sales.
-
Fowlmere Self Isolation and Support Group.
-
Listening out for villagers facing challenges and bringing together resources and individuals within the local community to help them.
-
While posted in Northern Ireland I supported military wives on base while our husbands were on operational deployment in Afghanistan.

AWARDS
The Bronze Medal for Bravery by The Royal Humane Society for actions in the 2017 terrorist attack on London Bridge/Borough Market, for aiding and assisting the injured and ultimately caring for the dead.

‘It is thanks to the professionalism and bravery of people such as Elizabeth Bryan, an off-duty A&E nurse from Cambridgeshire who ran to help at the scene of the Borough Market attack…that these attacks will never succeed. We are united in defending the values that define our nation.’ (Theresa May in Parliament and recorded in Hansard).

I hope you'll consider voting for me on the 5th of May.
